An important function of the Trust is to provide financial assistance to people in need and funding for this comes from the income from two commercial properties the Trust owns in the town centre.

The Trust is prepared to consider applications for help for basic household items, clothing or aids for disabled people.  The latter is often in conjunction with other support organisations with the Trust providing a contribution to the overall cost.  Applications are routed to us via recognised referral agencies, eg. Social Services, Citizens Advice Bureau etc, that are able to check the financial position of applicants and ensure they are receiving all the state benefits they are entitled to before applying to the Trust (the Trust cannot take the place of state benefits but can supplement).

The range of grants is wide and includes: clothing, school uniforms, bedding, furniture, carpets, white goods, equipment for babies / children and counselling (the Trust has contributed a sum to RELATE for many years to provide financial support for families on low incomes).

Grants to Provide “Relief in Need”

The Trust is governed by its charitable Scheme dated 02 October 1981.  The Scheme provides for grants as follows:

  • The area of benefit – Persons normally living within the Borough of Taunton Deane.
  • Who may benefit – Persons generally or individually who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress may receive grants of money or provision or payment for items, services or facilities calculated to reduce their need, hardship or distress. Donations or subscriptions may be paid to institutions or organisations, that in turn undertake to provide items, services or facilities to those in need.
  • Constraints – No commitment to repeat or renew any grant may be given. The Trust’s income shall not be directly applied in relief of rates, taxes, or other public funds but may be applied in supplementing relief or assistance provided by public funds. In exceptional circumstances persons living just outside the Borough boundary, but in the opinion of the Trustees merit support, may be included.
